Mother Nature Lends a Hand on the Bekkers Farmer
News from the Bekkers Farm - David & Denise Bekkers, Antigonish, NS

Life On the Farm
Farmers have to act like astute business people now more than ever. Dairy farming is a lot of physical labour, but you have to know your accounting, regulations and new technologies to stay competitive.

At the Bekkers Farm, we’re always looking for cost-savings and ways to make things more efficient. When planting crops we use minimum tillage to prevent soil erosion. It’s kind of like working with Mother Nature, instead of trying to completely re-create it. Practices like this ensure that our local farm is a sustainable and reliable producer of dairy goods for the Antigonish area. The availability of local producers allows consumers to purchase the products they need without supporting the large carbon footprint that accompanies so many imported goods.

The dairy business is near and dear to our hearts, and we’re so glad that this is something that we can share with, not only our community, but also our three wonderful children, and of course, our customers.
