A Bright Idea for the Environment

Langelaan Farms had a leading “green” firm help them customize new lighting for their barn. The new technology uses a system of fluorescent lights that burns 75% less electricity, while being 20% brighter and cooler than the previous lights.

Like people, cows become more lethargic during the winter months, when the days become shorter. Because of their winter mood, they eat less and produce less milk during this time.

The new lighting system at Langelann Farms helps to re-create the longer days of summer, which makes the cows happier. Additionally, the brighter environment makes it easier for cows to eat more, which in turn, increases their milk production. The Langelann Family expects the lighting should pay for itself in terms of increased milk production in about a year. Keeping cows happy helps keep their farms happy too.
